Rethymno - Gorges

The prefecture of Rethymno is full of gorges created by the water eroded limestone, making the area an ideal destination for nature lovers and hikers.

The gorges, apart from their natural beauty, are a combination of myth, history and folklore tradition. Deep ravines with almost steep rocky sides create a spectacular landscape definitely worth visiting by those who have adventure in their blood.

The gorge Prassano, one of the most impressive of the county, is considered quite difficult to cross, while the gorge Patsou offers you a bird observatory. The Arkadi gorge and Margaritsano are of the most beautiful. And let’s not forget also about the outstanding phenomenon of gorgeous Kollita gorges (glued gorges).

Rare wildflowers can be found in the Kotsifou and the Kourtaliotis gorges. The Kourtaliotis adjoins at one end with Preveli and the Libyan Sea.

The impressive thing about the gorges of the county is that you don’t have to climb wild mountains in order to visit them. Some small gorges are located near the city of Rethymno, such as Vederon gorge and gorge Galliano. These two, however, are at some parts off-limits due to private properties. The Milon gorge, also nearby, is considered very easily accessible.

The Petre gorge is easy to come by even from the beach.
