Evros - Churches

Evros is a region with a wealth of churches, with a long tradition. At that time, some of the most remarkable monuments of the Byzantine tradition were built in the region; not only in Greece but also in all the conquered regions of the Byzantine Empire. Along with the churches, in Evros someone can meet hundreds of chapels and monasteries with great work, some of which exist just a few decades.

Undoubtedly, the most important Byzantine monument in Evros is the church of Panagia Kosmosotira (Our Lady World’s Saviour) in Feres. It was built in the 14th century by the Byzantine Emperor Isaac Komnenos and until today it constitutes the center for all the Thracians.

The magnificent metropolitan church of Alexandroupolis, Saint Nicholas, dominates among the countless churches of the city; Saint Eleftherios and Saint Kyriaki are only two of them, while at the port of Alexandroupolis is located the chapel of Saint Efplous.

A visitor in Evros should not miss the church of Saint Anastasia of Makri, where is kept the impressive icon of the Saint.

From the monasteries of Evros, which many times are older and more impressive than its churches, stand out the Monastery of Dadia, Panagia of Evros and Panafia Protaitissa.
